Top 100 Villains Part 5: #79-75

Mon Dec 7, 2009, 11:42 AM
Some minor spoilers (I guess) in this batch of baddies, you've been warned.

79: Mr. Choc ("Tif & Tondu" comics)

Quote: "I suppose that you're disappointed, but I'm careful and I never take of my mask."

Mr. Choc is another great example of a villain totally outclassing the heroes of the story. Tif and Tondu were pretty much your average, run-of-the-mill franco-belgian detective/adventurer duo, whereas Mr. Choc is one of the most memorable villains of all time. For those of you who don't know this guy, Mr. Choc is the leader of La Main Blanche ("The White Hand"), a criminal organisation bent on, you guessed it, take over the world.

Ok, so far that's pretty basic stuff for a supervillain, but what makes Mr. Choc truly memorable is the mystery surrounding him. We never learn his real name or even what he looks like. Whenever we see him, his face is always hidden behind a medieval helmet and when he's finally demasked in his second appearance, the face underneath turns out to be just another mask. Plus, the guy just looks cool; the whole knight's helmet/dinnerjacket combo makes him one of the most recognisable and well-designed villains in comics.

78: Führer King Bradley/Wrath (Fullmetal Alchemist)

Quote: "Do you like watermelons?"

You may wonder why I have this guy higher than Father, when the latter is the big bad of the series and Bradley is an extremely high-ranking henchman. Well, sometimes the henchman is simply more memorable than the boss. Anyway, Bradley is definitely my favorite of the Homunculi and while he was pretty good in the old animé (where he was changed from Wrath to Pride) it's the manga that truly made him into one of my favorite villains.

Everything about Wrath in the manga is great, from his awesome fighting skills, to the fact that he easily has the most detailed backstory of all the Homunculi. Not to mention how he, early in the comic hides his ruthless true persona behind a facade of charming excentricity. All this combines to make Bradley my favorite "FMA"-villain and one of my favorite characters in the series as well.

77: Dr. Hannibal Lecter (various books & movies)

Quote: "A census-taker once tried to test me. I ate his liver with some fava-beans and a nice chianti."

Finally, we get to a villain most of you should recognise. After all, he's one of the most iconic villains in cinematic history, give or take a Vader or two. Thus, I won't write all that much about Lecter, mostly because I can't come up with that much to say about this guy that hasn't already been said. Suffice to say that the good doctor has everything I like in a villain. He's charming, cultured, intelligent and oozing with malicious evil. Finally, allow me to mention the slurping/hissing sound Hopkins makes after uttering the above quote. Just thinking of that sound gives me the creeps.

76: Dr. Huxton Rymer ("Sexton Blake" stories)

Quote: "Rymer, my boy, it strikes me you're getting into deep water; but if you can't get something out of it, you deserve to be shot."

Sexton Blake, the other Baker-Street Detective, had one of the greatest rogue's-galleries of all time. Our first representative for these colourful group of villains is Dr. Huxton Rymer. Rymer, like many of Blake's opponents was a figure of splendid moral ambiguity, a man capable of both dastardly crimes and noble, selfless acts. Plus, there's the fact that he stars in what is my current favorite of all the "Blake"-stories I've read; the epic and splendid "The Sacred Sphere", a story that truly captures what an interesting and complex character Dr. Rymer is.

75: Genya (Giant Robo)

Quote: "Tell me, Daisaku: If you were in my position, what would you have done? What would you have done?!!"

One of the most tragic villains I've come across in animation, Genya is the son of Professor van Vogler, obsessed with getting revenge of The World that (unjustly) blamed his father for causing the deaths of millions. To achieve this goal, Genya is willing to do everything, including allying himself with the criminal organisation known as Big Fire. Despite all his evil deeds and the untold destruction he causes throughout the series, the scene when Genya finally breaks down and understands how pointless everything he has done has been, really made me feel sorry for the character.
